"An experience
and surprise I expect never to forget was hearing America's
Youngest Jazz Band created and directed by Sonny LaRosa. These
youngster's first number "Bugle Call Rag" jolted me out of my
misconceptions. They had the impact of the 1950's Basie Band.
They not only knew how to swing collectively but the soloists
could tell a story! Sonny LaRosa should be a model for many
educators throughout the World."
Net Hentoff, World Famous Jazz Journalist and Author - Wall
Street Journal |

"Never have I heard kids as young as your
play so well - never in my life!"
Ray McKinley, World famous drummer and Band Leader, Successor to
Glenn Miller Orchestra |

Sonny is a Jazz musician who started out in New York City. He had traveled around the country
as a trumpet player with jazz bands during the early days of swing music. He has since
spent many years as a music instructor and band leader. Sonny has been
involved in music for over 60 years. In addition to being a great trumpet player, he has mastered
the piano, and he can play most of the instruments in the band.
In the past 20 years he has had great focus on creating what
is known as America's Youngest Jazz band. Trying to keep the band
fresh is easy, as Sonny has strict rules to not let any child over 12 or 13
remain in the band. As the kids move on to Junior High School, he recruits children from the
lower grades.
Sonny and his kids have had national spots on radio and television,
and he has taken the band as far as to Switzerland, to perform at the
Montreux Jazz Festival. Children from every background are in the band,
ranging from offspring of great jazz performers to local kids from his area in
Clearwater, Florida. Sonny is concerned about one thing when he selects his
kids, their desire to play jazz music. Sonny is truly one of a kind, and in his
own little way, he is a modern day hero to those children and parents who
find music to be a very important way of life.
Give Sonny a call or send him an email if you are interested in finding out more about the
band, or if you have some promotional ideas to get the band more exposure.
